Sandersprouts was born from a simple belief: that the natural world is the richest classroom a young child can inhabit, and that childhood is too precious to spend indoors.
Sandersprouts Nature School is a forest school program for children ages 3–4, born from the heart of Sanderling Waldorf School — North County San Diego’s only accredited Waldorf school, in Vista, California. We believe every child arrives full of wonder, already a naturalist, a poet, a scientist. Our role is not to fill them with knowledge, but to kindle the flame of their own curiosity.
We root our days in the twin traditions of Waldorf early childhood education and forest school pedagogy — gentle rhythms, imaginative play, story, and song, taken outside into the soil and sunshine of North San Diego, where children dig, climb, observe, and discover at their own pace. At Sandersprouts, there are no worksheets — only puddles. No flashcards — only fallen leaves, interesting rocks, and the smell of rain on dry earth.
Rooted in the Sanderling community’s long-held belief that children flourish when they feel secure, seen, and free to explore, we invite your family to join us at the beginning of that journey.

Imagine a world where every child is free to play, naturally and without limits — where childhood brims with adventure, awe, and wonder, and where every child's voice is heard and their innate wisdom is trusted.
Rooted in the forest school tradition, we trust that every child is a capable, curious learner when given time, space, and freedom in nature. Our educators act as gentle guides — following the child's lead, honoring emergent interests, and allowing the natural world to spark inquiry, creativity, and deep joy.
Rooted in Waldorf education's understanding of child development, we recognize each child as a unique expression of body, soul, and spirit. Seasonal rhythms, artistic activities, movement, and imaginative play are woven into every day, providing the security and beauty that young children need to flourish.
Inspired by Scandinavian Forest School models, we believe the natural environment is the most dynamic and responsive classroom available. Children develop resilience, self-confidence, and environmental stewardship through regular, sustained contact with wild places — streams, meadows, and forest trails.
We wholeheartedly believe in supporting the growth of the whole child. Using Positive Guidance and a Trauma-Informed approach, we scaffold children's social and emotional learning — supporting self-regulation, empathy, relationship-building, and responsible decision-making in the context of community.
"The need for imagination, a sense of truth, and a feeling of responsibility — these are the three forces which are the very nerve of education."— Rudolf Steiner

Our educators are trained in early childhood development, Waldorf pedagogy, and forest school practice. They are naturalists, storytellers, and deeply attentive observers of children.
At Sandersprouts, teachers serve as scaffolders — offering guidance and assistance while honoring each student's emergent learning process. They challenge children to problem-solve beyond their current abilities, fostering confidence and honoring the extraordinary potential within each young learner.
Our low student-to-teacher ratios ensure that every child is truly seen, heard, and celebrated for who they are.
